Theodoret of Cyrus
Since the agents of evil have employed both genuine and deceptive messengers in a similar manner, questioning them not to carry out God's will but to see if the prophecies align with their own desires, the Almighty speaks through the Prophet: To every person in the house of Israel who rejects divine truths but follows his own inclinations, treat lightly the judgment that awaits the unrighteous if he approaches a false prophet, seeking to satisfy his own wishes and checking whether the prophecies correspond with his personal thoughts. - I will respond to him. Driven by misguided beliefs, I will permit the false prophet to affirm his thoughts; for he is deserving of destruction and ruin.

Therefore, says God, let the house of Israel turn away from Me according to their own hearts, because they have forsaken Me in their minds. As they separate themselves from My care and find pleasure in the deceit of false prophets, I will allow them to reap the consequences of their actions. This was evidenced in the case of Ahab, where the false prophet Zedekiah fashioned iron horns and declared to Ahab that he would conquer Syria (2 Chronicles 18:10). However, Jehoshaphat did not heed the words of the false prophets but sought the true prophet of God, Micah, who prophesied in stark contrast to Zedekiah and did not sway Ahab; for Ahab did not inquire of the prophet with a heart to obey God's word but sought merely to fulfill his own desires. Thus, the false prophets, with God's permission, spoke falsehoods to him, and Ahab, believing their lies, proceeded into battle and faced punishment for his evil ways.
