Jerome of Stridon
From Canaan emerged Sidon, which is the origin of the city of Sidon in Phoenicia. Following this lineage is Arakei, who established Arkas, a town located across from Tripoli, nestled at the base of Lebanon. Near this city lies another called Sin, which, after suffering destruction in various conflicts, left merely its name for the area. The Arads occupied the island of Arad, separated from the Phoenician shoreline by a narrow channel. The Samaritans possess the renowned city situated in the elevated regions of Syria known as Emessa. The name Amath continues to be recognized in contemporary times by both Jews and Syrians. The Macedonians, who governed the East after Alexander, named the city Epiphanius.

Some believe that this (Amath) referred to Antioch, while others, albeit mistakenly and supported by seemingly coherent reasoning, argue that it was the designation for Emas, the first stop along the route from Antioch to Edessa, and is thought to be the same city referred to by the ancients as Emath.
