John Chrysostom
Observe how Sacred Scripture humbles itself to our level through its language. It states, “God ascended,” not implying that the Divine Essence is confined to a specific location, but rather that we should perceive the unfathomable humanity of God in this portrayal. Through this narrative style, the grace of the Spirit accommodates human frailty. The phrases “ascended and departed” fall short of adequately describing God, yet the use of such tangible language serves as a unique testament to His incomprehensible humanity, prompting Scripture to employ familiar expressions. It would be beyond the capacity of human comprehension to grasp the magnitude of the word if it were conveyed to us in a manner reflective of the Lord's grandeur. With this understanding, we should not focus solely on the simplicity of the language; instead, let us admire the boundless goodness of the Lord, recognizing His willingness to extend such grace in light of our fragile nature.
