John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Let us turn our attention back to the theme of obedience demonstrated by the righteous individual, who adhered to God’s commands without questioning their purpose or demanding explanations, unlike many who lack understanding and probe into the divine works, asking what this means or the significance of that. This faithful servant did not follow such a path; like one who cherishes his master, he committed himself to fulfilling his duties without hesitation. To further illustrate this point, consider that after God provided him with a promise and concluded their discourse, the righteous man promptly acted upon the command given to him. He implemented the divine instruction of circumcision on Ishmael, as well as on all the members of his household and his servants, just as God had instructed. He himself also underwent circumcision.

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

Given the requirement to adhere to divine commandments, the faithful Abraham underwent circumcision along with all members of his household. He also performed the same rite on Ishmael alongside the other individuals he engaged with.

Philaret of Moscow (Drosdow)

19th centuryChurch Father

On that specific day, the day when God manifested Himself and disclosed the law of circumcision to Abraham, Abraham promptly obeyed God's command. This eagerness to carry out God's will is particularly remarkable, given that the revelation did not specify the timing for Abraham’s own circumcision but rather for the male children of his household. Choosing to act quickly in challenging situations, especially when tied to a known and holy obligation, serves as a wise measure to navigate potential confusions and hindrances.
