One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Observe, dear friends, the insight of the righteous individual, who, in seeking justification before others, imparts wisdom regarding the understanding of God. Abraham remarked, "I thought that there was no fear of God in this place, and they would kill me for my wife." In other words, he expressed his concern that, in their ignorance, they showed little regard for justice; thus, he acted out of caution, fearing that, upon discovering her identity as his wife, their desire might drive them to harm him. Notice how succinctly he admonished them and instructed that one who consistently contemplates God should refrain from wrongdoing, recognizing His vigilant presence and maintaining a deep concern for righteousness, especially in light of the risk of divine retribution.
