There is nothing that delights God more than a heart filled with gratitude. Each day, He bestows countless blessings upon us, whether we acknowledge them or not, and all He desires in return is our thankfulness for His gifts, so that He may bestow even greater rewards upon us. For confirmation of this, we can observe the righteous man, who was once again honored with a divine revelation due to his gratitude. Having demonstrated his virtues before the people of Gerar, the king who had exiled him, and the shepherds who claimed his wells, the Lord, in His abundant love, sought to bolster his spirit and affirm his profound humility at the moment he journeyed to Bathsheba.

The Lord appeared to him that night, speaking, "I am the God of Abraham your father; do not be afraid, for I am with you; I will bless you and increase your descendants for the sake of Abraham my servant." It is noted, "And that night the Lord appeared to him." Observe the Lord’s care! To uplift and reassure him, God manifested His presence, declaring, "I am the God of Abraham your father," who has honored your father and elevated him beyond the inhabitants of this land. I am the one who promised to greatly multiply his descendants, providing for him in every way. "I am God...; do not fear." What does it mean to “do not fear”? Do not be distressed by Abimelech’s expulsion and the grievances caused by the shepherds. Your father endured similar trials; yet through these challenges, he gained greater honor. Thus, let not this dismay you; "I am with you." I permit this to occur, desiring that through your humility, your virtue may be exemplified, that the malicious intent of others may be revealed, and that I may reward you for it. "I am with you"; therefore, you will prevail, stronger than all who oppose and insult you. My regard for you will make you an object of envy. "I am with you; and I will bless you, and multiply your offspring for the sake of Abraham My servant." Consider the compassion of God! By declaring, "I am the God of Abraham your father," God demonstrated how He draws the patriarch close, choosing to identify Himself as the God of Abraham—not to limit His sovereignty to one individual, but to manifest His profound grace towards him. He signifies that He has drawn him so close that he stands esteemed among all men in His sight. Therefore, "I will multiply your descendants for the sake of Abraham My servant." Many blessings shall be granted to him for his faithfulness to Me; thus for his sake, I will increase your seed. In this way, the Lord encouraged the righteous man and, by reminding him of his father, stirred within him a fervor to exhibit virtues akin to those of Abraham.

I am the God of your father Abraham. This declaration brings to Isaac's mind the myriad perils that God guided Abraham through unscathed; in turn, God instills in Isaac the same sense of assurance that He had given to Abraham, saying, "Fear not" (Gen. 15:1).

The path that the righteous walk is always a hard path, my brethren. They are always hard-pressed, either by those who do not believe in God, or by those who cling to a false faith. Abel was wronged by his brother Cain; Noah and Lot were likewise oppressed by wicked people; and Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob likewise by the Gentiles.
