The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Observe the profound humility of the righteous individual! As he witnessed those who had previously persecuted and reviled him approaching as seekers of his aid, he remained humble and unpretentious. Keeping in mind the words he had received from God and relying on the strength of the Lord, he chose not to rebel against the king. Instead, demonstrating his characteristic meekness, he addressed them with great humility, asking, “Why have you come to me, having once despised and cast me aside?” He inquires, how is it that you now approach me, a person whom you have rejected and held in contempt?
