Observe how God had already revealed to him all that would transpire over time. This is the typical manner in which the Sovereign Lord interacts with every just individual: He grants promises but does not fulfill them immediately, testing the faithfulness and endurance of the upright before abundantly bringing to pass what He has assured. Since the promise concerned future fulfillment and the righteous individual required specific comfort in his current circumstances, note how the benevolent Lord, alongside the assurance of what is to come, uplifted him through the very message He now presents.

It is clear that the blessed disciples of Christ were also enriched and became spiritual fathers to numerous nations, specifically through their faith in Christ and what can be described as a spiritual rebirth. This point is made evident by Paul when he addresses those who came to believe through Him: "For though ye have a thousand instructors in Christ, yet not many fathers; I have begotten you in Christ Jesus by the gospel" (1 Cor. 4:15). Thus, their progeny became as numerous as the grains of sand, spreading in all directions: to the east and west, as well as north and south.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

The assurances presented in this promise, along with the previous verse concerning the inheritance of the Canaanite land, reflect a reiteration of the same divine pledges made to Abraham. The descendants of Jacob will indeed be vast in number, yet his spiritual heirs, those who have faith in Christ, one of his physical descendants, will be even more numerous. During the prosperous days of Israel's civil life under the reigns of David and Solomon, the nation will occupy a substantial area; however, the realm of Christ's Church will reach far beyond, encompassing the entire world from the furthest north and south to the extreme east and west.
