Having understood that she was unable to bear children due to God's will, and observing her sister's pride in her offspring, she sought some measure of solace and spoke to Jacob, “You have made it clear that my barrenness is not due to you; therefore, please take my servant and let her bear children for me, so that I may find some comfort in raising those born through her.”

She explained the significance of the name, noting that the son of the maid is called ‘judgment’ because the Lord ‘rendered judgment’ on her. Indeed, ‘Dan’ means ‘judgment’.
