John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

After realizing that God had closed her womb and observing her sister’s pride in her children, she sought some solace and said to Jacob, “You have shown me that my childlessness is not your doing; therefore, take my maidservant and let her bear children for me, so I can find some comfort in raising the offspring she bears.”

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Jacob consented to take his servant as a wife so that she would cease her persistent pleas for children. This decision aimed to ensure that the children born of both the free woman and the servant would be heirs alongside the offspring of the free woman.
