Consider how, through the strength of humility, he was able to bring his brother under control. In light of this, let us follow the example of this virtuous man and embody the same humility. If there are tensions in our relationships, let us avoid intensifying any animosity; instead, let us use gentleness and humility in our words and actions to soothe the hostility and bring healing to the wounded spirit. Reflect on the wisdom of this righteous man—how he softened Esau’s heart with the profound impact of his words, making him willing to extend kindness and honor to him. Truly, it is a remarkable virtue not only to love and please those who are favorably disposed towards us, but also to win over those who wish us harm through love. There is nothing as powerful as humility.

Just as poured-out water can extinguish a raging fire, a softly spoken word can quell anger, which often fuels further rage—resulting in a double benefit for us: we cultivate within ourselves a spirit of meekness and, by pacifying the agitated soul of our brother, we protect him from emotional distress.

And tell me, do you not criticize or condemn your brother when he is angry and hostile toward you? Why do you not strive to handle the situation differently, instead allowing yourself to become more agitated? For fire cannot extinguish fire; that would be contrary to nature. Likewise, anger cannot be quelled by more anger. What water does for flames, gentleness and kindness do for wrath. Hence, Christ instructed His disciples, "If ye love them that love you, what reward have ye?" (Matthew 5:46). To further persuade through example and address the indifferent, He continued, "Do not the tax collectors also do the same?" Essentially, regardless of whom you consider, do they not act similarly? Even among tax collectors, this principle is evident; it is natural for those who are loved to reciprocate love. Yet I urge you to aspire to something higher; I encourage you not only to love those who love you but to extend affection even towards your enemies. This blessed individual, James, who lived prior to the Law and without external instruction, overcame Laban first through his profound meekness, and then he encountered his brother. While he may have received divine assistance, he demonstrated personal effort first.

In the same manner, we must recognize that regardless of our endeavors, we cannot achieve anything without divine support. Just as we cannot accomplish what is necessary without higher assistance, we must also understand that we cannot receive such support without our own diligence. Therefore, let us also strive to make an effort and seek the utmost care, so that through our endeavors and God’s mercy, our virtues may flourish day by day. Thus, we may attain the grace from above, which we can all receive through the grace and compassion of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom, to the Father and the Holy Spirit, belongs glory, power, and honor, now and forever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
