The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Upon learning about the incident involving their sister, they were deeply sorrowful. What does it mean to be deeply sorrowful? They were in distress; it was completely intolerable and produced profound grief within them. Those men were not only sorrowful but also filled with anger due to the disgrace brought upon Israel by Shechem's act of sleeping with Jacob's daughter. Take note of Jacob’s children and their commitment to purity; they viewed this act as the most significant transgression. Witness how a righteous father raised his offspring to uphold virtue, while the son of Emor, driven by his desires, led to the downfall of both his father and the entire city.
