One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Shall we proceed with the story of Joseph today and reflect on how this remarkable individual, having been granted authority over all of Egypt, exercised great wisdom to pacify its people? "He went out," it is noted, "from the presence of Pharaoh and traversed the entire land of Egypt." During the seven years of abundance, the land yielded grain in abundance, and he collected vast quantities of bread, likened to the sand of the sea. After receiving complete authority from the king, he gathered the harvest and stored it in various cities, thus ensuring ample provisions for the impending famine. It is evident how this virtuous man, through his humility, patience, and other admirable qualities, was rewarded while still in this life, transitioning from prison to the palace of the king.
