2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

They recounted their encounter, stating, "That individual asked us about our lineage, inquiring whether our father was still living and if we had a brother. We answered his questions based on what he asked. Could we have possibly anticipated that he would request us to 'Bring your brother'? Do not assume, they clarified, that we willingly divulged our family matters. He regarded us as spies, seized us, and rigorously interrogated us about our situation; thus, we provided him this information, aiming to clarify everything to him fairly."

Ignatij (Briantchaninow)

19th centuryChurch Father

They replied, "My husband questioned us rigorously and in great detail. He inquired, ‘Is your father still living? Do you have another brother?’ We responded to his inquiries. Did we realize he would request, ‘Bring your brother?’"
