The instruction given concerning the clean animals was to gather seven pairs, whereas previously it was commanded to bring one pair of all creatures regardless of their classification. The directive now states: "Of every clean animal you shall bring in seven, male and female; and of the unclean animal you shall bring in two, male and female." To clarify the rationale behind this, it is added, "I will destroy all that exist from the face of the earth" (Gen. 7:4). It is important to consider how the righteous Noah discerned which animals were clean and which were unclean, especially since the definitive classifications established by Moses had not yet been made. Noah's understanding came from an innate wisdom bestowed by God that allowed him to determine the nature of the creatures.

Indeed, God's creation has none that are unclean, as expressed in Scripture: "God saw all that He had made, and behold, it is very good" (Gen. 1:31).

Human nature itself has created a division in perception of cleanliness. For instance, even today, some communities abstain from certain foods labeling them as unclean, while others partake of them, influenced by cultural practices. Thus, Noah’s inherent knowledge revealed to him which animals were suitable for consumption and which were mistakenly deemed unclean. Questions arise, such as the reason behind the command to bring two of each unclean animal and seven of each clean animal. Why specifically seven and not six or eight?

While this inquiry may extend, if you are willing and interested, we shall succinctly address this matter in light of God's grace. Numerous interpretations exist, many of which veer into fanciful speculation about numerology. However, it is crucial to recognize that numerical references are commonly found in Scripture. For instance, when Jesus Christ sent His disciples to preach, He sent them "two by two" (Mark 6:7), forming twelve in total, while the gospels consist of four. You need not dwell on such points, for you are already equipped with sufficient knowledge to discern the truth from fables.

The command to bring "seven by seven" of the clean animals was established so that the righteous Noah would find comfort, as well as those who would share in the bounty of these creatures. The choice of seven carries significant meaning, reflecting Noah’s virtuous inclination towards God. The merciful Lord, fully aware of Noah's righteousness and his gratitude for deliverance from the flood, foresaw that upon their release from the ark, Noah would wish to offer sacrifices in thanksgiving for his salvation. Therefore, in order to preserve the pairs of animals for future generations and allow Noah to express his gratitude, the directive was to bring seven of each kind of bird into the ark.

This wisdom will be further illustrated as we delve deeper into the account. The purpose of collecting "seven in number" of the clean animals is now clear. Be cautious not to be swayed by those who, in contradiction to the divine narrative, insert their own speculations into the teachings of Scripture.

Let us acknowledge this ark, which symbolizes the Church. Within it, may we be pure creatures, yet let us not obstruct the unclean from finding shelter alongside us until the deluge has passed. Both the clean and the unclean occupied the ark simultaneously, but the aroma of their offerings was not equally acceptable to the Lord. After the flood, Noah made sacrifices to God from the clean beasts, not from those deemed unclean. Nevertheless, none of the clean animals abandoned the ark prematurely due to the presence of the unclean. The raven did indeed leave the ark and forsook the community, but it was an unclean creature taken in pairs, rather than a clean one taken in sevens. Therefore, let us reject the impurity of this division.

The Scripture indicates that unclean animals accompanied Noah into the ark, which does not imply that authorities should deny any of the morally deficient tragic figures—who may be less immoral than the comic figures—from receiving baptism. Rather, it signifies that the unclean will one day be part of the Church, not due to a distortion of doctrine or a relaxation of discipline, but through acceptance. The unclean creatures did not enter the ark through various openings as they wished, but rather through a single entrance established by the builder.

This demonstrates that virginity is an integral part of creation and that the institution of marriage arose following the original sin: through marriage, a virgin body comes into existence, restoring what was forfeited at the source in the fruit. It is also noteworthy for our discussion that the animals that entered Noah's ark in pairs were unclean, whereas the clean animals were counted in odd numbers.

I confront the charges against me for asserting that in the Hebrew text, unlike the first, third, and subsequent days, it does not state that God saw the second day as good (Gen. 1). I suggest that the duality of the second day symbolizes incompleteness, as it consists of two parts and hints at marital union. Hence, all the creatures aboard Noah's ark came in pairs and are deemed impure, establishing the significance of singular numbers. I am uncertain about the basis of their accusation regarding the second day—whether it pertains to what we claim is recorded or to what we say is absent; or even to our interpretation, which might differ from the obvious meaning of Scripture.

While it is not noted that God regarded the second day as good, let the affirmation not rely solely on my words but be verified by the consensus among Jews and other scholars such as Aquila, Symmachus, and Theodotion. If this absence in the text contrasts with the affirmation on other days, they must either furnish an adequate explanation for the omission or accept my reasoning. Additionally, if there were indeed unclean animals aboard the ark in pairs while the clean ones were in odd numbers, none can dispute that it is indeed recorded. They ought to clarify this discrepancy; failing to do so means they must acquiesce to my conclusions, willingly or not. They may either indulge me with a grander discourse or content themselves with my humble offering. I feel compelled to evaluate the ecclesiastical scholars who deliberated on odd numbers: Clement, Hippolytus, Origen, Dionysius, Eusebius, Didymus, along with our own Tertullian, Cyprian, Victorinus, Lactantius, and Hilary. Cyprian’s treatise on the sevenfold, representing the odd number, serves as solid evidence of his reasoning. Shall we also reference Pythagoras, Archytas of Tarenta, and Publius Scipio’s sixth book on the Republic, as they too reflected on odd numbers? Yet, if even these thinkers dismiss my interpreters, I will turn to the grammarians who declare, “It is pleasing to God to have an odd number.”

A deeper understanding prompts us to consider that the influence of the intellect upon the soul, and the soul upon the physical body, is akin to the role of a father within his household. Just as the intellect governs the soul, the soul governs the body. When the mind is sound, the household thrives, and the soul prospers; likewise, when the soul is healthy, the body flourishes. A clear mind controls all desires, guides the senses, and governs speech. This is why the Lord aptly invites the righteous to ‘Enter,’ signaling them to turn inward, to delve into the depths of their own souls. Here lies salvation, here is refuge; outside is tumult and peril. However, if you are within, you shall find safety outside, for where reason reigns, there are virtuous thoughts and righteous actions.

And if no vices cloud the mind, then his reflections are illuminated.

Now, let us explore the reason God instructs Noah to enter the ark and to gather seven of each clean animal, male and female, and two of each kind of unclean animal, to preserve the seed for all of creation. I believe this represents a period of purity, as the number seven is both sacred and undefiled, not mingled with anything else, nor originating from anything different. It is termed virgin because it does not bear offspring of its own, remaining detached from maternal reproduction and union with the female. Thus, the virgin is referred to by a feminine title yet is endowed with the masculine quality of sanctity, for any male lineage that penetrates the veils is deemed holy by the Lord, as indicated by the prophet: she was allowed to bear a son, which signifies holiness (Isaiah 66:7). Conversely, the number two lacks completeness, as it is prone to division; that which is incomplete encompasses emptiness. In contrast, the number seven bears fullness, resembling ten, akin to the original, similar to which alpha exists: that which persists eternally, from which all virtues arise, each in its own form, and flow.

This discourse, as presented from the Hebrew scriptures, seems to fall short when compared to the previous account and its Greek version, particularly because it does not categorize the birds into those that are clean and unclean. This incompleteness can be ascribed to the straightforwardness and occasional lapse of the ancient manner of expression, which frequently includes redundancies and sometimes relies on assumptions regarding the context needed for clarity and thoroughness in communication.
