John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Then he adds consolation here also, so that they may not despair: “so we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear. What can man do to me?” Behold again consolation in temptations. [...] “So we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear. What can man do to me?” The Apostle speaks as if to say: you have received a promise from God Himself, so do not doubt. He Himself has promised, so do not waver. “The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear. What can man do to me?” He does not cite the words of the prophet in vain. By them he seals his own words, so that the hearers may be more encouraged and not despair. Let us also say the same in every temptation and not be troubled by human affairs. If God is well pleased with us, no one will overcome us.

When He is against us, there will be no benefit even if all are our friends. So also, when He is disposed toward us, there will be no harm even if all rise up against us. Therefore it is said, “I will not fear. What can man do to me?”

Theophylact of Bulgaria

11th centuryChurch Father

Since God Himself said this, it is undoubtedly true. Therefore let us again say boldly that the plunderers of our possessions will not constrain us.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

"So that we may boldly say: The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear. What can man do to me?" (Ps 117:6). The Apostle necessarily added this instruction so that, lifting their gaze to God, they might look boldly upon their persecutors.

From Christian brotherly communion the Apostle turns to the basic relations of earthly life. He exhorts them to honor the holiness of marriage and to guard against love of money. When the readers think of the plundering of their possessions (Heb 10:36), which they may lose again, they should remember that God is their helper. Without God's permission, men can do them no evil.
