John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

The immense kindness of God is evidenced in His elevation of a sovereign who governs justly and leaders who exercise discernment. He recognizes not only the one who renounced material riches as righteous, but also the one who acts with integrity in all matters. It is the duty of rulers to uphold justice, as those who possess the strength to enforce laws are equally capable of subverting them. Some interpret this in relation to Christ: for indeed, the King will govern with righteousness; as for the leaders, they are seen as the apostles, aligning with the declaration in the Psalm: Thou shalt make them princes over all the earth (Psalm 44:17).

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

Our Savior, who is just and sinless, reigns as the source of all righteousness and imparts teachings that transcend the law. The rulers begin to exercise authority with discernment. Instead of remaining concealed, he speaks with clarity and understanding. The king of righteousness will be a man, intimately connected as a brother to those who inhabit the earth; for indeed, the genuine God, the Word, became flesh, as affirmed in Scripture (John 1:14).

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Look, in justice, rulers and dignitaries will rise to govern with discernment, specifically hearkening to Hezekiah and his leaders.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

In the Hebrew Scriptures, following the previous prophecy regarding those who descended into Egypt, a new prophecy emerges, focusing on the arrival of Christ and His apostles. This King will govern with justice, impartially discerning right from wrong, while His leaders will also exercise their authority in righteousness, prioritizing deeds over individuals.
