John Chrysostom
Even though your time is limited and you may feel insignificant, remember the immense assistance of God. Instead of focusing on the forthcoming trials, acknowledge His supreme authority.
Behold all that fight against thee shall be confounded and ashamed, they shall be as nothing, and the men shall perish that strive against thee.
8 Church Fathers comment on this verse
Even though your time is limited and you may feel insignificant, remember the immense assistance of God. Instead of focusing on the forthcoming trials, acknowledge His supreme authority.
Look, everyone who opposes you will experience shame and disgrace; they will be as if they never existed, and all your adversaries will fade away. You may call upon them, but you will find no one to challenge you, for they will be as if they had never been. I, your God, grasp your right hand, declaring to you, Fear not, O Jacob, little Israel; I will assist you, says God, delivering you, O holy one of Israel, who is worthy of eternal praise. This elucidates what was previously stated: you, He says, are Israel, my servant, Jacob, whom I have chosen, the offspring of Abraham whom I cherish (Isaiah 41:8); see, all those who resist you will feel shame and humiliation.
Many have plotted wickedly against the holy servants of the mystery, attempting to undermine the redemptive works with their own weakness; yet, those who oppose righteousness will come to naught and perish because opposing the priests of the divine message is nothing other than a battle against the principles of holiness. Therefore, they will not be found, He proclaims; when you seek them, there will be no one to offend you, for they will be as if they had never existed. This is akin to the song of the blessed David: I saw the wicked uplifted, growing like the cedars of Lebanon, but when I passed by, there was none; I looked for him, and he could not be found (Psalm 36:35-36). Numerous arrogant individuals rise up against the honor of the holy servants of the mystery, yet, as the Holy Scripture states, they will be uprooted from the land (Proverbs 15:5), facing sudden and severe destruction since it is written, ‘He who lifts his house high seeks destruction’ (Proverbs 17:16). Thus, they will not exist, declares He, those who contend with you will not be found; assuredly, no one will stand against the apostles, as the arrival of the glorious kingdom is certain. Is it not true? There is no count of those who opposed them, but you will not find them present; they are subdued and subject to divine judgment. Therefore, He encourages them, saying, I am your God who supports your right hand, meaning who strengthens you and delivers you from all trials. I say to you, Fear not, Jacob, little Israel. Regarding the number of those who oppose or govern, Israel was indeed small (not referring to the entire nation, but rather those chosen for apostleship); yet their Savior, who provided immense support, was great, strong, and capable. And if God delivers, who can cause harm?
Your adversaries will be the Babylonians, who will rise up against you. The Idumeans, the Greeks, and all the nations that oppose you will vanish as though they never existed.
Look, all who oppose you will be defeated and brought to disgrace; they will be as though they never existed, and those who contend with you will come to ruin. Indeed, your foes, the Jewish people, along with all who fight against you and your persecutors, will be reduced to nothing, and you will search for your enemies but will not locate them.
The liberation from Babylon is symbolically illustrated through the experiences of the Babylonian empire. The Almighty, having shattered their dominance and freed His people from harsh captivity, restored them to their homeland. In a deeper and more profound sense, this also pertains to the holy apostles and triumphant martyrs: the adversaries have been humiliated, their oppressors are now absent and forgotten, while those who uphold the truth are exalted and recognized by all.
Jacob, identified as the worm, embodies the struggle against the weight of trials that afflict you. As you gaze upon the distant end of these tribulations, hold fast to My promise. I have assured you, I am the Lord your God, I grasp your right hand, and I proclaim, Fear not, I assist you (Is 41:13-14). The Septuagint uniquely phrases this as, I help you, fear not, O worm Jacob (Is 41:13), which differs from other translations. He who was previously referred to as the chosen one in the declaration ‘Jacob whom I have chosen’ (Is 41:9) is now likened to a worm, embodying this image amid the cities of faithless nations deeply entrenched in their delusions and idol worship.
His mission involved dismantling and obliterating demonic influences within the core of human thoughts, demonstrated through the purity and clarity of his apostolic message. Even the Creator refers to Himself in this manner, stating, I am a worm, and not a man, a reproach among men, and despised among the people (Ps 21:7). Only a select few were privileged to follow our Creator—twelve apostles in total—which is reflected in the Septuagint’s addition: Israel is a small people (Is 41:14, LXX).
This concerns the Babylonians. When they subjugated the Jews, they misused their authority, acting in defiance and rivalry, showing them disdain and scorn, ridiculing and discrediting them, all while facing no repercussions from those they had oppressed and degraded.
These statements can only be linked to the victory of Christ’s Church over the world; this perspective reveals the complete realization of prophetic words. While the prophets also referred to the forthcoming terrestrial kingdom intended for the chosen people, this was not their primary focus. Instead, they proclaimed the benevolent intention of the Creator to secure the everlasting salvation of humanity's souls. They announced the arrival of the world’s Redeemer and the promise of a superior eternal existence for mankind. Furthermore, the subsequent verses 14-16 are directed toward the community of believers who are spiritual descendants of Abraham and Jacob.
