Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

He speaks to the north, 'Bring forth,' and to the south, 'You shall not take away.' This indicates His determination to prevent the malign influence of wicked spirits from spiritually assailing those who approach Him. In the past, the infamous adversary, along with his minions, ruled as a tyrant, tormenting humanity and hindering them from discovering the truth or turning to God in repentance. Through Christ, this oppression has been dismantled; He levels the path to salvation for the elect, removing any barriers as if they never existed. The reference to the children returning from all corners underscores the moment of Christ's arrival, when the gift of sonship is bestowed upon those on earth through the sanctifying work of the Spirit.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

The River North shall be brought forth, and let not the River Leaven be restrained. This echoes the words found elsewhere, ‘From the end of the heavens ... I will gather you, saith the Lord’ (Deuteronomy 30:4).
