Thou hast neither heard, nor known, neither was thy ear opened of old. For I know that transgressing thou wilt transgress, and I have called thee a transgressor from the womb.

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

You have neither heard nor known of these matters, nor was your ear initially opened. In essence, I endured so that you might comprehend why I did not impose the punishments I had previously mentioned. I bore this in mind to help you understand my restraint. Indeed, I made predictions through my words, but in fact, I have not executed any such deeds yet. This is akin to what Christ used to express, though He did not disclose all the parables. The very cause of their spiritual blindness is also revealed. For I knew you would act deceitfully, and from the moment of your conception, you have been considered an apostate. Therefore, I did not speak to you about that promise and allowed you to wander aimlessly. How can anyone be unrighteous from birth?

These expressions signify a plethora of vices, for it is inconceivable that anyone could be unrighteous from the womb. Similarly, it is stated elsewhere, "Sinners have departed from God from their birth, have strayed from their mother's womb, have spoken lies" (Psalms 57:4). Reflect on this: when they transitioned from childhood to adolescence, they completely forsook God. Others remark, “You are designated as a lawless individual from your mother's womb.” This was manifested at the time they exited Egypt, as they were liberated from the sufferings of Egypt through Moses and brought into salvation, as if reborn.

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

Refer to the Commentary on Isaiah 48:5: You were unaware and lacked understanding; you did not heed my words at first. I revealed them to you through another means, fulfilling what had been prophesied. Those who are deceitful and have cherished wrongdoing since birth—having been taught from a young age to worship false gods—will face the consequences they deserve.

Athanasius the Great

4th centuryChurch Father

Behold, you will be cast aside and known as an unrighteous person even from your birth, as stated in Isaiah 48:8. The term "womb" here refers to the sacred act of baptism.

Eusebius of Caesarea

4th centuryTeacher of the Church

The Simmach states: From the moment of your birth, you have been labeled a rebel. Thus, it was not your actions that prompted this, but rather my human condition, through which I prophesied and revealed to you the impending downfall of your foes, striving through all prophecies to rescue you.
