The Church Fathers on this verse

2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

I will not exchange you for silver, meaning not for wealth, as I asked nothing from you and had no need for earthly things or the sacrifice of cattle, sheep, and goats. Rather, it is because you have sinned and have neglected the honor and glory that is rightfully mine from you. However, I will rescue you, says He, from the depths of misery; for he was held captive by the Babylonians, and the inevitable result of such captivity is a lack of every good thing.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

I did not surrender you to the Babylonians due to a lack of resources, but rather as a consequence of your transgressions. Yet I offer you liberation once more. The Scriptures refer to bondage as a furnace of suffering; just as a furnace conceals its flames while only emitting smoke, so too do the captives, unable to weep freely, release their mournful cries as if they were smoke, fueled from within by the fires of despair. For your adversaries believe they have triumphed over both you and Me, assuming they possess you due to My apparent frailty. Therefore, I will rescue you from your severe captivity, so that those who are unfamiliar with Me may come to recognize My strength.
