Isaiah 64:4Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

From the beginning of the world they have not heard, nor perceived with the ears: the eye hath not seen, O God, besides thee, what things thou hast prepared for them that wait for thee.

John Chrysostom

For centuries, we have neither listened nor observed any deity like You. Have we truly witnessed? No, He asserts; although we have strayed and worshipped other gods, we have never encountered a God who compares to You. Your deeds, O Lord, are remarkable for those who patiently await Your compassion. Grace serves as a genuine support, particularly for those who endure; while it may not happen right away, it will certainly come to pass in due time.

Consider those in this life who bask in earthly possessions like riches, authority, and renown; how they, swollen with pride from their abundance, perceive themselves to be beyond earthly concerns, all while engaging with transient gifts that are not true treasures and that slip away more swiftly than a fleeting dream. Even when these possessions are held for a brief period, they provide only temporary satisfaction and do not follow them thereafter. Yet, if these ephemeral gains offer such delight to their holders, how much greater joy awaits the souls invited to the boundless heavenly riches that are everlasting and consistently favorable? Not only do these heavenly treasures surpass earthly goods in both magnitude and quality, but they exceed human comprehension.

Currently, our existence resembles that of a fetus in the womb, constrained and unable to perceive the brilliance and liberty of the coming age; but when the time of our emergence arrives, the lives of those ensnared by this world will culminate in the day of judgment, resulting in those unprepared being cast from darkness into deeper darkness and from grief into profound sorrow. Conversely, those who are perfected and have retained the likeness of the royal image will be presented before the King and will enter into the eternal service that all angels and archangels render to God.

We have not heard from eternity, nor have our eyes beheld God, but only You and the work that You will accomplish for those who eagerly seek Your mercy. For mercy will shine on those who practice righteousness, and Your paths shall be remembered. The divine nature is inherently unseen, as it is written, "No one has ever seen God" (John 1:18). Yet, He can be perceived through the mind's eye in His wondrous and indescribable creations. His invisible characteristics, which have been contemplated by creatures since the dawn of time, become manifest, along with His everlasting power and divinity (Rom. 1:20).

He is often recognized through His benevolent acts and the revelation of His profound mercy, swiftly rescuing those who have lost all hope, extending His hand to lift those who are weary and fallen. Those who utter such prayers declare that since the world's foundation, they have neither heard of nor witnessed such a God, but only You; for to those who place their trust in You, You generously bestow Your mercy. He continuously supports those who pursue truth, showering His blessings upon those who remember His paths, that is, those who follow His commands, for the ways of the Lord refer to His commandments. Therefore, the holy David exclaims in one instance, "In Thy ways do I dwell" (Psalms 118:37); and in another: "The way of Thy commandments flows when You have enlarged my heart" (Psalms 118:32).

From ancient times, they have not listened, nor have their ears been attentive, nor have they seen, O God, aside from You, what You have prepared for those who trust in You. You have encountered those who find joy and practice righteousness in Your ways, and they will keep You in their remembrance. LXX: From eternal ages we have not heard, nor have our eyes seen any God but You, and Your deeds that You perform for those who await Your mercy: for He meets those who do what is right, and they shall remember Your paths. The Apostle Paul, a Jew among Jews, paraphrases this testimony from the sacred texts in his letter to the Corinthians, not translating verbatim as is his usual method, but conveying the genuine meaning (1 Cor. 15) to emphasize the point he wishes to make.

Therefore, let the nonsensical teachings from the Apocrypha, which circulate within the Churches of Christ concerning this testimony, be silenced. It can truly be said that the devil lies in wait with the affluent in secret places (in apocryphal works) to lead the innocent astray. Again, he lurks in secret (in apocryphal texts) like a lion in his den; he lies in wait to grasp the needy (Psalm 9:29-30). For the Ascension of Isaiah and the Revelation of Elijah bear this witness. Because of this, and for many similar reasons, the women of Spain, particularly those from Lusitania, are led astray, burdened by sins and drawn away by diverse passions, ever learning yet never arriving at the knowledge of the truth (2 Tim. 3), accepting the marvelous fabrications of Basilides, Balsam, and Thesaurus, Barcelona, and Leuzibora, among other names. Irenaeus, the bishop of Lyons and martyr, who is considered a disciple of the apostles, addresses these matters thoroughly, explaining the origins of numerous heresies, especially those of the Gnostics, who, through Mark the Egyptian, seduced noble women, first in Gaul near the Rhone, then in Spain, combining lust with fables and calling their ignorance knowledge. What the populace asserts in this context indicates that they have never learned with their ears or seen with their eyes what God has reserved in the future for His saints, that He engages those who uphold the truth and remember His ways. Moreover, according to the Seventy, they claim to have never recognized any other God besides the one who is truly God, nor have they witnessed such wondrous works by another, which He has accomplished for those who await His favor, who practice truth, and who recall His paths. Yet, why is it stated, No man hath seen God at any time (John 1:18), and again, Man shall not see My face, and live (Exodus 33:20)? Therefore, God is not described through mere words and is not visible to the human eye, but He is perceived by those about whom it is written: Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God (Matt. 5:8).

The repulsiveness of sin reveals the fairness of grace: God's grace exists alongside judgment, just as judgment is intertwined with grace. Consequently, to those who endure trials and “practice righteousness,” He extends assistance through His grace. For it is not their wrongdoing that He equates with filthy garments, but their righteousness. If righteousness can be likened to such things, then sin lacks any fitting analogy.

The radiance of the Son Perhaps the apostle, when he uttered those prophetic words, was not truly inspired by the Spirit of revelation but was simply interpreting the thoughts of others randomly. This is far from the truth: everything the apostle proclaims is conveyed to him through the revelation of Christ. His understanding of Isaiah's words comes exclusively from the 'prophecies of Isaiah.' Isaiah himself claims he had never beheld God. However, he did witness the splendor of God when he predicted the mystery of receiving the body from the Virgin. And if you, O heretic, fail to recognize that it was the only begotten God he beheld in His glory, heed the words of John the evangelist: This is what Isaiah spoke when he saw His glory and declared Him (Jn 12:41).

The apostle, the evangelist, and the prophet all stand in opposition to you, heretic. Although it is written: No man hath ever seen God; the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He hath declared Him (Jn 1:18), Isaiah did indeed see God. He beheld His glory, privileged above others because of his prophetic insight. For this reason, he was sentenced to death by the Jews.

The splendor of the light of truth cannot be perceived by one with an impure heart, and that which brings joy to those with a clean conscience will serve as a torment to those burdened by guilt. Let us turn away from the darkness of worldly pursuits and purify our vision from all the defilements of sin, so we may behold the glory of God with unclouded sight. To attain this, we must recognize our true aim: Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God (Matthew 5:9).

Eusebius of Caesarea

Understanding God through Christ encompasses the immense power that You possess. Throughout the ages, we have not come across any other deity, as noted in Isaiah 64:4, nor can we falsely declare that we have witnessed another who has created such magnificent works. You alone are the true God. Regarding the gifts bestowed upon those who aspire to behold You, we have concluded that these are the works of another. You have thus made Yourself knowable, enabling the prophet to guide them toward understanding God. He speaks for the people, affirming that no one has ever seen God (John 1:18) and that no one can gaze upon My face and survive (Exodus 33:20).

However, it appears that the prophet refers to Christ, the Son of God, who was revealed to Moses in the wilderness and was visible to all, manifesting in glory before everyone. It is written that “all the people saw the glory of the Lord.”

Vissarion (Nechaev)

The Jews in captivity, anticipating the display of the Lord's grace, acknowledge that He alone has the ability to perform the mighty acts of power and justice that have been previously proclaimed. There has never been a moment when anything similar has been witnessed or heard from the idols of the nations, apart from the one true God.
