    For even as the body without the spirit is dead: so also faith without works is dead.

    Didymus the Blind reads the comparison thus: as the spirit gives life to the body, so works keep faith living. Symeon the New Theologian says that whoever believes Christ keeps His commandments, and that "the sign of deadness is inactivity." John Chrysostom adds that works without faith are also dead, so the spiritual house "must be strong on both sides."
