This wicked people, that will not hear my words, and that walk in the perverseness of their heart, and have gone after strange gods to serve them, and to adore them: and they shall be as this girdle ,which is fit for no use.

John Chrysostom

Those who refuse to listen to my teachings and pursue the ways of foreign deities illustrate the consequences of wrongdoing. Do you recognize how the escalation of wickedness leads to judgment? Observe how the healer combats not only the harm done to individuals but also the evil itself. He addresses those who disregard my message and choose to follow alien gods, noting others who are similarly unwilling. Yet, there are those who have received blessings; I did not select the nations for my own purpose but for the benefit of those who were chosen.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

I will humble the arrogance of Judah and the arrogance of Jerusalem, the excessive pride of these unrighteous individuals. They refuse to listen to My words, choosing instead to follow their own hearts, engaging with foreign deities to serve and worship them; they will be like a man whose loins are unfit for any purpose. This indicates a period of exile in Babylon, as the Euphrates River splits the city into distinct sections. At the Euphrates, in a ‘cleft of stone,’ he was commanded to conceal his waist. The prophet refers to it as Babylon.

There the people of Judah lived, rendered ineffective, despite being known as the people of God; they were not self-governing and failed to adhere to divine service according to the law, existing in a state of purposelessness like the discarded loincloth. The subsequent verses clarify the necessity of the loinslayer's condition.
