The Church Fathers on this verse

Jeremiah 13:11Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

For as the girdle sticketh close to the loins of a man, so have I brought close to me all the house of Israel, and all the house of Juda, saith the Lord: that they might be my people, and for a name, and for a praise, and for a glory: but they would not hear.

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Just as one man's loins are steadfastly bound to another's, so too will I remain closely united to him. The girdle symbolizes the community, while the prophet represents God; similarly, the girdle that was initially secured to the prophet's loins stayed intact, but once severed, it became tarnished. Likewise, the people, while remaining connected to God, were preserved, but upon turning away, they became entirely unworthy. Let them be esteemed in my sight, worthy of honor and praise. He remarks this not out of a need for glory, but rather for the benefit of humanity. If you seek to honor me, then why have you brought shame upon yourself?

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

‘For as the man of the loins shall hold fast to the loins of his husband, so shall the house of Israel, and all the house of Judah, have forsaken Me,’ saith the Lord, ’that men may be named unto Me, both for praise and for glory, and they will not hearken unto Me.’ Through these statements, God illustrated the vastness of His goodness and demonstrated the deep connection He desired with the Jews, longing to elevate them and make them renowned. Yet, through their own wrongdoing, they brought shame upon themselves. By conveying prophecy not merely through words but through tangible representation, He reveals future events in a unique manner.
