3 Church Fathers comment on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Listen and heed as the Lord has declared. Pay close attention to the prophet, who consistently provides reasoning when discussing judgment; not only that, but he also offers guidance when proclaiming, I will not forgive, I will not show mercy, and in addressing those deemed unworthy, he gives further encouragement. The one who has communicated this and made it known, consider His words, Listen and pay attention; it is not enough to simply hear yet remain unresponsive; there is nothing more irrational than ignoring the voice of God. Are these merely empty threats from man that may prove untrue? The Lord is mighty and will surely fulfill His promises.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Listen closely and take notice; do not elevate yourself, for the Lord has declared. As mentioned previously, "Every cup shall be filled with wine, so that kings and priests and prophets and all the residents of Jerusalem shall experience intoxication." He continues by saying, "Listen and take notice, both with your outer senses and inner spirit, in thought and in physicality; do not be lifted up by pride, focusing on your own vanity, as no one is free from this state of intoxication due to sin. Therefore, those who elevate themselves in pride against God are diminished, corrupted, and unworthy of His grace.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Cease your pride and foolish arrogance, and receive the truth as if it comes directly from God.
