Why wilt thou be as a wandering man, as a mighty man that cannot save? but thou, O Lord, art among us, and thy name is called upon by us, forsake us not.

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

You will partake of sustenance like a person in slumber. Thus, He indicates that He has departed, akin to one at rest who is indifferent to all. Yet, the Lord does not slumber. Observe how subtly He reveals His unchanging nature. In Your might, You are capable; yet our transgressions obstruct. Still, this is for Your own glory. Yet, Lord, You dwell within us, and Your name has been invoked upon us. He does not turn to the ancestors but calls upon the name of God. Likewise, those close to Moses acted to avoid reproach.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

O Lord, You dwell among us, and Your name is invoked upon us; please do not abandon us or overlook us. You, who once would have seemed a stranger, a pilgrim, and a wayfarer among the Jews, choosing to leave Your former abode, now reside within us, and it is through Your name that we are recognized as Christians. Therefore, do not forsake us or forget us, for it is by us that the voices of the prophets have proclaimed Your forthcoming arrival.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

The one who slumbers is unaware of those who are crying out, and the one overwhelmed by illness cannot offer prayers. This seems to echo the prophet's message, urging, "Do not hesitate to extend compassion; for You are vigilant, omnipotent, and ever-present among us." He further communicates, "You dwell within us, O Lord, and we bear Your name; do not forsake us." Additionally, he presents the response provided by God.
