John Chrysostom

The Lord stands beside me. How could you claim, 'You have misled me,' while you bore it? You faced persecution and failed to comprehend. Did not God prophesy this? Did He not disclose what was to come? Initially, the prophet lacked experience and they overlooked their own dignity. Sin is entirely brazen, manifesting in a refusal to repent and a tendency to malign the one who rebukes in order to engage in deeper wickedness. Like a powerful wrestler, they toiled yet remained oblivious. Essentially, they dismissed God's concern for me, twisted the meaning of my actions, and persisted in their malice. They felt shame because they could not see their own disgrace, which will never be forgotten. They were misguided in their intentions, failing to recognize that their actions were accumulating great culpability for themselves. For God does not simply incite their wrongdoing, but seeks retribution for their arrogance.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

All those who have walked this earth alongside me are waiting to see if I will falter, hoping to overpower me and exact their revenge. Yet the Lord stands by my side as a powerful defender. When adversaries, foes, and those who were once at peace with us conspire against us and seek to ensnare us, we should not be overly troubled. Instead, let us echo the words of the prophet: For the Lord is with me as a strong warrior. Consequently, my oppressors will stumble and grow weak, and they shall be greatly humiliated for failing to grasp the significance of eternal truths, which cannot be erased. Because they inflicted persecution, they failed to understand the prophet's message, leading their ignorance to result in profound shame.

They did not recognize the everlasting reproach that awaits them, one that will not be forgotten in oblivion. I invite those who once shared tranquility with me, who pursued me in their attempts to ensnare me, to reveal their true intentions, especially when a righteous person and a teacher of the church, after enduring persecution, is met with such judgment and recompense.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

The Lord stands beside me as a mighty warrior, revealing the triumph that comes from divine assistance. 'For this cause they were driven away,' and “they could not prevail: they were ashamed of themselves, because” they failed to comprehend 'their disgrace, which shall remain forever.' He then calls upon God to act as judge and to hold them accountable for their intentions. In his deep sorrow, suffering greatly, and troubled by the burdens of this life, he begins by praising the God of all and subsequently curses the day of his own birth. For he declares:
