2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Concerned that he may be deviating from the right path in his declaration, Jeremiah instead lifts his voice to proclaim the mercies of the Lord, exclaiming, “Praise the Lord, for He has rescued the soul of the afflicted from the grasp of the evil one.” He refers to himself as an afflicted man, acknowledging the absence of human support, yet recognizing that God’s assistance has never failed him.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Sing praises to the Lord, for He has rescued the spirit of the needy from the grasp of malicious individuals. The humble in spirit, lacking material wealth, finds solace in this world, and as Paul reminds us, “only that we may remember the poor.” When this humble soul receives justice from the Lord, he praises Him wholeheartedly, rejoicing in his liberation from evil. This deliverance is not a result of our own worthiness, but is purely by the grace of Him who redeems the downtrodden. The one who is set free does not possess the arrogance of the lost, but instead embodies the humility of the redeemed.
