The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Every city or region flees at the sound of the rider and the archer. They venture into places that are unreachable and scale the heights of the cliffs. Furthermore, the additional phrases about entering forests or caves are included by the Seventy. The Divine message portrays the army of the wrathful Babylon, which causes all people to abandon the city and seek refuge in inaccessible areas; yet even then, they cannot turn aside the anger of God. As previously noted, what is historically understood concerning Jerusalem also applies to the Church when it turns away from God, leading to its surrender either to its adversaries during times of persecution or to its own faults and sins.
