John Chrysostom

Your transgressions have caused this situation. This refers to a time of significant abundance. When this was declared, famine and disease prevailed, and this cannot be disputed. Yet we often fail to recognize this fact. It is not due to any change in God but rather because your sins have distanced you from His blessings. I emphasize that your sins have led to the removal of His favors. Sometimes it can be more challenging to abstain from giving than to offer assistance; thus, one who aids a patient suffering from a fever may be seen as unkind, while one who withholds help reveals a deeper concern.

Jerome of Stridon

Your transgressions have led to the rejection of these blessings, and your offenses have stripped away goodness from you. Thus, when the sea surpasses its bounds and there is insufficient rain, it is not the Lord’s hand that refrains from acting, but rather our sins that have caused the withdrawal of the gifts bestowed upon us, which are redirected to those who have not sinned. As it is written, we have indeed caused the good things that were destined for you to be removed: "We will command the cloud, that it should not rain upon it" (Isaiah 5:6). The early and late rain can represent the Law and the Gospel, along with the diverse callings from the first hour to the eleventh, where the laborer in the vineyard is assured the same reward of eternal life (Matthew 20).

Sin takes the good away from us, my brethren. These words were not spoken by just one prophet to one people, but all true prophets spoke them to their peoples. False prophets flatter the sins of their followers and thus contribute to the further departure of blessing from them.
