As a cage holds an abundance of birds, so do their homes overflow with deceitful praise. The prophet refers to predatory birds, such as hawks and kites, which capture smaller birds to fill their nests with their catch. Through this imagery, the prophet illustrates the affluent Jews who schemed against their less fortunate neighbors to seize their possessions. Additionally, he highlights the treacherous individuals who ensnare the unsuspecting not in wilderness, as fishermen might, but within the confines of their own homes, where they devise malice against their fellow men, as is stated, "think iniquity in their lodges" (Psalms 35:5). They invite their neighbors into their dwellings, where they conspire wickedly to amplify their wealth through deception.
