John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

However, if you are able to call out to anyone who might hear you, or if you catch sight of any of the holy angels. This illustrates the excessive nature of Eliphaz's remarks. It is only natural for Job to reflect on his circumstances based on his own perspective, as seen in Eliphaz's statement: “Do not speak this to me. God is great, and He accomplishes many things that remain unknown to us. Our insignificance is vast... Thus, everything He does is good.”

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

It is futile for Job to seek help from those who are mighty or righteous, for calamity invariably follows the unrighteous. Even those who may seem successful for a time will ultimately face destruction along with their entire household. Indeed, every individual is predestined to experience suffering from the moment of birth; however, supplication to the Lord Almighty, whose justice prevails, rescues the faithful, while the wicked are brought low. Nevertheless, the trials endured by the righteous should be embraced with a spirit of joy, as they serve as a promise of future blessings. Eliphaz concludes that this is the wisdom derived from experience, and it is in alignment with this perspective that Job should reflect upon his life.
