He ensnares the wise in their own deceit, and the schemes of the cunning are rendered futile. Job 5:13. For oftentimes, those who take pride in human wisdom find themselves in opposition to the decrees of God when they conflict with their desires. They attempt to thwart the divine order through cunning and intricate scheming, all to satisfy their own agendas. In their treachery, they inadvertently fulfill God's will, even as they strive to alter it. While they endeavor to resist the Almighty’s purpose, they find themselves obeying His commands; for it is often the case that what appears to be a foolish contradiction to God’s plans serves to advance His providential design.

Thus, the Lord ensnares the wise in their malice, turning their misguided actions into instruments of His purpose, even when they seem at odds with it. This will be further demonstrated through concrete examples.
JOSEPH'S BROTHERS Joseph was blessed with dreams in which the sheaves of his brothers bowed to his sheaf, and the sun, the moon, and stars paid him homage. When he shared these revelations with his brothers, they were immediately filled with envy and fear of his future supremacy. Upon seeing him approach, they said in ire, "Here comes the dreamer. Let us kill him... and see what becomes of his dreams." Gen. 37:19-20. Wishing to avoid his lordship, they cast him into a well and sold him to passing Ishmaelites. He was taken to Egypt, where he endured slavery and faced wrongful accusations, yet he remained virtuous and was vindicated, gaining a reputation throughout Egypt. Through divine wisdom, he prudently stored grain in preparation for an impending famine. When famine struck, Jacob sent his sons to Egypt in search of sustenance, and they encountered Joseph, who they did not recognize as he distributed grain. To receive the nourishment he had to offer, they were compelled to bow down before him.
Let us reflect on how divine providence led to Joseph's sale, which ultimately resulted in his honor. Their attempts to subvert God's design ended up fulfilling it instead, as they unwittingly enacted His will through their schemes. While they sought to impede Joseph’s rise, their actions only served to escalate it, demonstrating that human wisdom is ensnared in its own machinations in its futile opposition to divine intention.
SAUL When Saul noticed that David, his subordinate, was growing increasingly successful and celebrated, he sought to undermine him by offering his daughter as a wife, demanding as a dowry the foreskins of a hundred Philistines, believing this would lead to David’s demise. He reasoned that the warrior would either perish in battle or be gravely wounded. As it is written: The king requires not silver as a bride price, but foreskins from a hundred Philistines to avenge his enemies. 1 Samuel 18:25. Nevertheless, David, bolstered by divine assistance, brought back two hundred foreskins instead. In this unexpected outcome, Saul's cunning was turned against him, and his plot to eliminate David only served to magnify his valor.
JONAH Sometimes, even the chosen ones attempt to act shrewdly, a fact illustrated through Jonah. Sent to preach repentance to the Ninevites, he feared that by doing so, he would forsake Judea, and thus he resisted his divine commission. He found a ship headed for Tarshish, but soon after, a storm arose. The crew cast lots to determine who had brought about this turmoil, and Jonah confessed that it was he. Consequently, he was thrown into the sea and swallowed by a great fish, which, in an ironic twist, brought him to the place he initially rejected. God’s storm revealed Jonah’s rebellion; the sailors bound him and the fish consumed him, leading him back to his appointed mission. When God commands, man may refuse, yet his own rebellion can necessitate his compliance, proving how divine will operates in ways contrary to human intent.
JUDGES Let us further examine the understanding of the Jewish leaders, observing the resistance they mounted against the mission of our Redeemer. As believers gathered to witness His miracles, the priests, consumed by jealousy upon observing the world thronging to Him, plotted to curtail His influence. They declared, “It is expedient that one man should die for the people.” John 11:50. However, the very death they orchestrated united His body, which is the Church, instead of tearing it apart. The Law stipulates that in the sacrificial representation, the throat of the dove should be pierced rather than severed, symbolizing that even in death, the head remains with the body—the Mediator between God and humanity, who became the true sacrificial offering through His death, thereby drawing us closer to Him. Despite the intent to extinguish His ministry by persecution, faith flourished rather than waned. Their actions to undermine His miracles inadvertently served to extend them, for the Lord ensnares the wise in their misdeeds, ultimately harnessing the very fervor aimed against Him.
The Just and Compassionate One governs human affairs so that some are restrained out of mercy while others are allowed due to indignation, always directing them towards the fulfillment of His purpose. He works in extraordinary ways, ensuring that even actions taken apart from His will do not conflict with it. Thus, even when evil is wrought, it can be repurposed for good. The Psalmist asserts, "Great are the works of the Lord; they are studied by all who delight in them." Psalm 111:2. His works are so profound that they reveal His will in everything humanity undertakes. What one perceives as a hindrance may indeed facilitate God’s intentions, leading us to recognize that there is no wisdom, understanding, or counsel that can withstand the Lord’s designs. Proverbs 21:30. Therefore, as we act, we ought to seek the Supreme Will, ensuring our conduct aligns with it in reverence, avoiding prideful actions that might seem contrary to genuine service. The divine purpose cannot be escaped; those who yield to His direction prosper, while those who resist bear a heavier load on their hearts. We must now turn our attention to the ignorance of those who opposed Him, illustrating how their blindness only serves to strengthen His cause.
