Observe how Eliphaz dismantled all the goodwill of the conversation and delivered a harsh indictment. In what manner did he achieve this? By illustrating that Job is neither among those who are spiritually uplifted nor among the hopeful. His remarks were directed specifically at Job, even though they appear general. He states that this is what we have heard and observed; yet if you do not experience this yourself and continue to face hardship, only you are aware of your own transgressions.

This is the essence of the matter, as we anticipated, just as it is stated in Job 5:27. It becomes evident that in these remarks, nothing is said regarding the external appearance, for it is indicated to ‘seek’ those things that are not presented openly. Thus, one who claims to have 'sought' these aspects reveals that what is truly intended is concealed beneath the surface of the words. Following this, there emerges a folly in boasting, as he further states: And now thou hast heard it, consider it thoughtfully, as noted in Job 5:27.

Any lesson that the mind contemplates demonstrates a significant limitation in understanding when it attempts to instruct one who exceeds it in wisdom. Consequently, the statements made by friends, while they may contain elements of truth, do not align with the judgment of the inner Arbiter. They lose their weight of authenticity precisely at this juncture, as they are not fitting for the recipient. Just as medicines can become ineffective when administered to healthy individuals, it is vital to consider the context in which words are uttered: the event, the timing, and the very person being addressed. We must assess whether the truth of the message aligns with the spoken words, whether the timing is appropriate, and whether the individual’s character does not undermine the truth of the sentiment along with the suitability of the moment.

Only he who skillfully directs his arrows with precision earns commendation, as he first considers the target he aims to strike. Conversely, one who poorly aims and harms his own compatriot illustrates the need for careful consideration in communication.

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

It is futile for Job to seek help from someone who is powerful or holy, as affliction inevitably follows the unrighteous. Even those who may seem to thrive momentarily will soon face destruction along with their entire household. Indeed, every person is destined for suffering from the moment of birth; however, when one prays to the Almighty and Just One, the reverent are delivered, while only the wicked will fall. The trials faced by the righteous should be embraced with a spirit of joy, as they are a promise of future blessings. This is the wisdom gained through experience, Eliphaz concludes, and in light of this understanding, Job should reflect upon his life.
