Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

The harlot Rahab, representing the church, displayed the thread that held the secret of the Lord's blood from her window, so that her home would be spared during Jericho's destruction. Similarly, the Scriptures mention the holy ones in this manner: these are... who emerged from the fervor of the household of the father of Rechab (1 Chronicles 2:55).

The harlot Rahab, representing the Church, bound a cord to her window as a sign of the sacrament associated with the shedding of blood, in order to secure her salvation during the fall of Jericho.

Ambrose of Milan

4th centuryChurch Father

The individual who found herself without an avenue for escape during the city's downfall, when her belief triumphed, secured a crimson cord to her window. This became a testament to her faith and a representation of the Lord's own suffering, serving as a reminder of the mystical blood destined to redeem the world. For those battling at the city's gates, the name of Jesus symbolized triumph; conversely, for those facing peril from within, the reflection of the Lord's afflictions was a beacon of deliverance.
