Joshua 2:19Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

Whosoever shall go out of the door of thy house, his blood shall be upon his own head, and we shall be quit. But the blood of all that shall be with thee in the house, shall light upon our head, if any man touch them.

2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

The declarations of the spies align closely with the truth being conveyed. They stated, “Every man that goeth out of the door of thy house shall be guilty of himself: but we are innocent of thy word." Furthermore, the Church imparts the message of salvation; those who remain outside the Church will not attain eternal life. The remainder of the narrative further elucidates this truth.

Cyprian of Carthage

3rd centuryChurch Father

This depiction illustrates that everyone destined to experience eternal life and evade the devastation of the world must be united within one singular dwelling, the Church. Should any of those within this assembly choose to leave through the threshold of the house, meaning that any individual who has received grace within the Church turns away and departs, that person alone will bear the responsibility for their own ruin.
