The Church Fathers on this verse

Joshua 23:13Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

Know ye for a certainty that the Lord your God will not destroy them before your face, but they shall be a pit and a snare in your way, and a stumbling-block at your side, and stakes in your eyes, till he take you away and destroy you from off this excellent land, which he hath given you.

The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

In addition to his encouragement, he included warnings. For he proclaimed, "If you do this, behold, the Lord will not remove these tongues from your view; they will become a snare and a temptation... in your sides and in your sufferings... in your hair, until you perish from this good land which the Lord your God has bestowed upon you." The account of the Judges clarifies this further. Let us understand why the Hebrews have not taken full possession of the land as promised by God; it is because they have cherished connections with sinful nations and have started to emulate their wickedness, leading them to be stripped of Divine protection and forced into servitude.
