Ambrose of Milan

As time passed, Samson's locks started to regrow. On a particular day at a lively celebration, he was brought out from his confinement to stand before the Philistines, facing a multitude of spectators. Close to three thousand men and women were present, and they unleashed scornful taunts upon him, showering him with derision. For a man of dignity and honor, this humiliation was more distressing than imprisonment itself. While life and death are inevitable, being the subject of mockery is a profound disgrace.

Caesarius of Arles

6th centuryChurch Father

They summoned Samson from the prison, and he entertained them, being positioned between the pillars. Here we see a representation of the Cross. Samson reaches out his hands towards the two pillars, as though grasping the beams of the cross. Furthermore, through his demise, he triumphed over his adversaries, as his agony led to the downfall of his oppressors. Thus the Scripture states, And the dead which Samson slew at his death were more than as many as he slew in his life (Judges 16:30). This profound mystery is completely realized in our Lord Jesus Christ, for through His sacrificial death, He has secured our salvation, which was not announced during His earthly ministry. The Lord lives, and His kingdom endures forever. Amen.
