Upon erecting an idol within, they commenced sacrifices to it, thus gaining a deity alongside the land. Their understanding descended into utter foolishness. The Lord was rightly incensed, for He had been deeply offended. Consequently, all of Israel ought to have viewed the descendants of Dan as adversaries and foremost foes, holding them accountable for their irreverence toward God. Yet, it seems they mingled with them, believing they could honor them as if no wrongdoing had occurred. Now, let us recount the consequences of their folly in due order.

The entire nation of Israel has transgressed against me (Hos. 10:9), for when his wife was wronged, he rushed into battle (Judg. 20), choosing not to seek justice for the offenses against his God. He turned a blind eye to the fact that the idols of the ephod and the teraphim were being worshipped in Micah's house.

We can clearly trace the ancestry of this Levite. It is stated that ‘Jonathan the son of Manasseh, the son of Gershon, the son of Moses, he and his sons served as priests of the tribe of Dan until the time of the land’s settlement.’ They established a graven image created by Micah during the period when the house of God was in Shiloh. Thus, their priestly practices were illegitimate, not only because they worshipped idols but also because they took on the role of priests despite being Levites. The Almighty had designated the priesthood exclusively to the descendants of Aaron.

This is likely due to the lawgiver having a foreign wife; God decreed that those born from him should be counted among the Levites rather than the priests to uphold the sanctity of the priestly order, so it would not be tarnished by familial ties. If even the siblings of the lawgiver criticized him (Num. 12:1), what might those more inclined to defiance and autonomy not attempt? If they dared to confront Aaron, who married a woman from the royal lineage, how much more would they challenge the descendants of Moses, who took as his wife a Midianite and the daughter of an idol worshiper?

The idea that sinful acts serve as a focus for temptation needs no further evidence or explanation. It is worth noting our tendency to overlook how sin is often paired with temptation and how this temptation proliferates; the connection is deep, and the extent of temptations drawn forth by sin is profound. The Scriptures recount in the book of Judges that a man named Micah created an idol for himself and his household, subsequently hiring a Levite to perform sacrifices to it. This led the Danite soldiers to discover the idol within Micah's home, resulting in its theft. Hence, idolatry, which began with an individual, spread to encompass an entire city and tribe. This exemplifies the typical progression of sin through temptation.

A wicked heart fashions an unseen idol of sin; unclean longing brings it into our hearts; sinful actions reveal it and give it form; the secret sins, once veiled, are exposed and disseminated; temptation arises and sin increases; those influenced by a corrupt example are led astray; others, too, fall into the snares of malice and the condemnation of their neighbors. What can be said, then, about those sins that, due to their very nature, cannot be easily hidden, or those boldly committed, or those acts that, because of the standing of the transgressors, possess a unique power to entice others? The sowing is abundant, resulting in a vast harvest of weeds.
