The significance of Iarib as both avenger and judge is exemplified in the story of Gideon. When the followers of Baal sought Gideon's death for dismantling their grove and altars, his father remarked, "Let Baal avenge himself," or "let Baal judge him." Consequently, they began to refer to him as Jerobaal, which translates to "let Baal avenge himself." This illustrates the association between the name and the idea of divine retribution.
