Theodoret of Cyrus

The Lord has summoned me at a time to bring low His chosen ones. Both the Syriac version and the Hebrew scripture refer to this period as a time of distress, and we frequently find ourselves mourning the challenges of our days. The Lord has humbled the virgin, the daughter of Judah; for these tribulations, I weep. Holy Scripture often compares the gravest afflictions to the process of winnowing, where all the sheaves are bent, and typically, no grain is left untouched.
