It portrays the soul exposed before God, stripped of its splendor, tainted by sin, and, burdened by iniquity, unable to gaze upon God with unveiled countenance. 'Or a leper, or one who pours out seed,' - this imagery signifies those who are excluded from the worship of the sanctuary, being cast out due to the lingering presence and envy of the old self.

Leprosy was a severe and often contagious disease deemed unclean. As per Moses' law, anyone who came in contact with a person afflicted by leprosy was considered unclean themselves and had to undergo purification rites. This law could have been established to prevent contagion, or it might symbolize how leprosy arises from spiritual impurity. The sacred texts reveal instances where individuals such as Miriam, struck with leprosy for opposing Moses, Giesias for his deceit against the Prophet, and Hosea for his unlawful encroachment into the priestly role, were immediately afflicted. Lepers were marginalized, cast out from society and community interaction.

This is illustrated where the ten lepers encountered Jesus not within the confines of a dwelling or village but at the outskirts, ‘entering Jesus into a certain village’ and standing at a distance, not daring to come closer (Luke 17:12). Nonetheless, these were the very souls He chose not to disregard.
