When did the bishop access the Holy of Holies? It was on the purification day, which according to divine instruction falls on the tenth day of the seventh month. For it is stated, ‘The Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he enter not into the Holy of Holies at all hours, within the veil, before the face of the purifier, which is over the mercy-seat, and that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud over the purifier.’ This indicates that in the sacred space, the Lord God revealed His presence, showing His grace, not amidst darkness or smoke, nor in fire as on Sinai, but rather in a cloud of illumination.
