The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

Cyril. We will embrace the Sabbath in Christ, finding rest by turning away from worldly endeavors, free from earthly anxieties, and instead reveling in "the Lord," as stated, “Delight yourself in the Lord” (Psalm 36:4), sharing in His chosen inheritance. This is affirmed by God in the Book of Leviticus when He speaks to the sacred mystic Moses: “When you come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a Sabbath unto the Lord” (Leviticus 25:2-10). Do you comprehend that the law permits you to till the land, plant, and tend your vineyards only until the seventh year? Yet in that seventh year, it instructs us to relinquish our preoccupations with these matters. As sabbath-keepers in Christ, we find solace in abandoning earthly concerns and completely distancing ourselves from the matters of this world.
