John Chrysostom

In the book of Leviticus, the Lord declares, "But if the children of Israel sin, I will deliver them to a strange nation, and they shall go there, and serve a strange god." This statement foreshadows the Babylonian exile, highlighting that they will go to a foreign land and worship unfamiliar deities. Moreover, the reference to the serpent raised by Moses in the wilderness, along with the truths concerning the Holy Trinity, is also significant.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

I will bring destruction upon those who wield the sword. To grasp the full weight of this warning, it is essential to consider its connection with the earlier phrasing of the same verse: I will scatter you into tongues. This scattering refers to the exile of the ten tribes of Israel into Assyrian territories, the captivity of the Jews by Nebuchadnezzar, and the relentless dispersion of the Jewish people throughout the world following the fall of Jerusalem. The Lord warns them that any efforts to regain independence through their own might will ultimately fail, and He issues a dire warning of ruin should they attempt to resist their oppressors with violence.
