And I dispersed them throughout all kingdoms, which they know not: and the land was left desolate behind them, so that no man passed through or returned: and they changed the delightful land into a wilderness.

Through these statements, he confirmed that they had continually opposed the ultimate Judge. Instead of heeding the messages of the holy prophets and striving to align themselves with the will of the Divine Lawgiver, they should have embraced a life marked by integrity and righteousness while walking a path of purity. Yet, they chose instead to act with cruelty, disregarding their Instructor, and adopting hearts that were obstinate and unyielding. Their contempt for the sacred words was relentless, and they grossly insulted the messengers who proclaimed the prophetic truth through the Holy Spirit; they descended into such foolishness that they refused to turn from their ways until the prophesied events came to pass, thereby suffering the repercussions of divine judgment.

When God declares: "And I will cast out into every tongue, and the land shall be desolate from him that passeth through, and from him that returneth," it is clear that this is again expressed in prophetic foresight. They were exiled among the Persians and Medes, having already endured captivity, and their land lay in ruins, as the prophetic word indicated, devoid of anyone passing through or returning. Some perished in warfare, while others, burdened by oppression, were taken into captivity. Thus, we believe this, along with other matters, serves as a prediction. The harm and even destruction that stems from disobedience to divine commandments is evident from the fate of the ancients; numerous arguments are unnecessary to demonstrate this truth; it is clear to anyone who has experienced the rewards of faithfulness.

"I will withdraw," meaning to reject, "into all languages that do not comprehend, and the land shall lie in ruin," referring to desolation, "after those who fade away, and after those who return." This is made clear by what follows, as the Prophet switches his mode of expression and states, "And they made the desired land a wasteland." God spoke these things concerning the disobedience and punishment of their ancestors: it is astonishing that those who had endured severe oppression, who had just been liberated from it, and who had not yet established a city, should once again face such disasters.
