Jesus and Christ are distinct titles: Jesus signifies his role as Savior, while Christ denotes his role as High Priest. Anticipating this revelation, the prophet Moses assigned these names to two individuals selected from among all others. The first, Hosea, who was designated as his successor, received the name Jesus (see Num. 13:17). The second, Aaron, his brother, was called Christ. This act was intended to symbolize the royal and priestly authority of the soon-to-appear Jesus Christ.
