Jerome of Stridon
With the strength of good deeds and a firm opposition to evil, the faithful engage their intellect to exemplify their beliefs. As noted in Acts 1:1, Jesus initiated both His actions and teachings. The breastplate, referred to as έπίθεμα, signifies an 'addition' or something 'superior'; this aligns with the highest expression of the term "thenupho.” Echoing this understanding, we can interpret the words of Malachi: “The lips of the priest should guard knowledge, and people should seek instruction from his mouth” (Malachi 2:7). The foremost duty of priests lies in their comprehension of law and doctrine, and the infusion of divine grace shapes one who is equipped to correct those who misstep, leading them away from righteousness. They must possess a clear distinction, enabling all to recognize the works and character of the priest. This understanding relates to sacrifices—what is presented on the altar and what is bestowed by God to the priests.
