Cyrill of Jerusalem
The entity referred to as "the church" is defined by its essence, which encompasses the calling and gathering of individuals, as expressed in the Book of Leviticus where the Lord instructs, "And thou shalt gather all the congregation unto the entrance of the tabernacle of the congregation." It is significant that the term "gather" appears for the first time in Scripture during God's appointment of Aaron as high priest. Furthermore, in the Book of Deuteronomy, God commands Moses, "Gather the people unto me, and I will declare unto them my words, from which they shall learn to fear me" (Deuteronomy 4:10). The church is referenced once more in relation to the tablets, which contain all the words that the Lord spoke to you on the mountain from the fire on the day of the assembly (Deut. 9:10).

Moses might have articulated it more clearly by stating, "On that day when you were summoned by God, you were gathered together." Additionally, the psalmist declares, "I will praise you in the great assembly; among the multitude I will praise you" (Psalm 34:18).
